The Next 10 Years

As I transition into the new chapter of my life and exit high school, I would have to change and learn a lot. To help me go through this smoothly, I plan on reading these 10 books in the next 10 years.

Fiction

Lord of The Rings - by Peter Jackson: I have always been lured by fantasies and the worlds they describe. As I read this book about Frodo Baggins's journey to prevent Sauron from getting the hold of the One Ring, I will enjoy the adventures of Frodo and his friends as they fight against Sauron's will.

Pride and Prejudice - by Jane Austen: As Austen follows the stories of the married couple of Elizabeth & Darcy and Jane & Bingley, she explores the various societal issues of the time. Going through their story, Austen highlights the aspects of the society that existed in late 1700s. Reading this book will help me gain insights into the historical societal views and allow me to explore important themes.

One Hundred Years of Solitude - by Gabriel García Márquez: Exploring the story of the town of Macondo and the family of Buendías, the novel focuses upon a century of town's existence. Throughout that century, civil wars happen, leadership changes, and people with various mindsets take actions. Looking at this town which experiences inevitable change throughout the years, I will learn how people adapt and will we able to connect that to this ever-changing world.

The Road - by Cormac McCarthy: Set in a post apocalyptic world, the novel is about a journey of a father and his son as they set their foot to reach the warm weather of the South. The strong relationship between the family is presented throughout the book as they face various difficulties throughout the journey. To explore the commitment between a father and a son, I look forward to read The Road.

The Awakening - by Kate Chopin: Set in early 1800s, the novel explores various themes of self-discovery through the character of Edna Pontellier. As Edna departures from the conventional societal expectations, she "awakens" her inner self and realizes who she really is. Reading this book will be helpful for me as I dive into adulthood and face experiences that require me to reflect upon and adapt myself.

Non Fiction

What we Owe The Future - by William MacAskill: Following Philosopher William MacAskill's arguments, I want to explore his views about responsibility to the future. Reading this book, I want to educate myself about this modern world and its impact on upcoming generations, and I want to reflect upon my own choices.

The Age of Wonder - by Richard Holmes: Studying the various developments and scientific discoveries of the late 18th century, Holmes explores the Romantic Age of Science. Learning about various individuals whose efforts contributed to our modern understanding of this universe, I want to appreciate the importance of the work, and get inspirations from those great minds to positively affect the world myself in future.

Freakonomics - by Steven Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner: Diving into this real world, this book will help me explore the ways of rational thinking. I am excited to explore how the authors use economics to study even non-economic issues and want to develop such data-driven thinking in myself too.

Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln - by Doris Kearns Goodwin: Focusing upon the political tensions of the late 1850s and early 1860s, the book explores the revolutionary work of former president Abraham Lincoln. Learning about the challenges her faced, and how he overcame them to become one of the most influential individuals in the American history, I am eager to take inspiration from him and to shape myself into a person that can positively impact this society.

How to Win Friends & Influence People - by Dale Carnegie: Reading one of the most famous self-help book, I want to learn about Dale Carnegie's insights for improving personal communication and social skills. Exploring various ways for successful interactions with others will help me as I venture towards my college and professional journey.
