Validity of Dumas's Piece
Firoozeh Dumas wrote the piece called "The F Word." When I first read that title, I thought the essay was probably talking about curse words. But no. The essay is nowhere near that. Rather, it talks about her name. She describes how her name, "Firoozeh," distinguishes her from the society in America, and makes others think that she is not a good fit in society. She demonstrates this by commemorating her experience for applying for a job. She, when applied with her real name, did not get a single job offer. But when she changed the name on her resume to "Julie," she got so many job offers.
According to her anecdotes, people were discriminating against her based on the ethnicity of her name. And she displays that in many other examples than the one I just mentioned. But I do not think that her experiences could be replicated in America today. She is talking about when she applied for a job in the 20th century, and the times have changed a lot since then. People have become aware of other cultures, and do not discriminate against anybody. And my dad did tell me that when he was given training to interview people for the jobs for his company, the company training had clear instructions to the interviewers that skills are what matters. You can’t choose one person over another because of their background.
That is solid evidence that shows that America views everyone equally, and thus I believe that Firoozeh’s experiences with American society will not be replicated with anyone in future.
I like how you applied Dumas’ argument to today’s culture and society. Everyone now is way more accepting, and as you said, no one really denies people based on ethnicity anymore. My parents are also employers, and they tell me how they don’t care about what people are and that they just want workers. Overall though, i like your application of Dumas’ argument to today and how you contested her position.
ReplyDeleteI think its cool how you used personal evidence as info to back your claim, with your dad being an employer and saying skills are a thing that matters and not background
